PETITION: Allow farmers to take action against GOPHERS
On March 7, 2024, the Government of Canada announced a ban on the use of strychnine to manage pests such as gophers. This year, the gopher situation in southern Alberta has increasingly become out-of-control.
What may seem like a non-issue to city folk in Ottawa is a serious problem and is having an impact on the livelihood of rural Albertans, especially those who make their living off the land.
Sign the petition below to call on the federal government to allow the use of strychnine again to manage the out-of-control gopher population.
- YES! I support our farmers and ranchers and do not want to see their crops destroyed by gophers.
- YES! I am concerned that if left alone the gopher infestation will lead to economic challenges for farmers and ranchers.
- NO!, farmers and ranchers should not be left to pay thousands of dollars in equipment repairs as a result of the strychnine ban.
- NO! the federal government should not ban products that protect Alberta livestock and crops.
- YES! I support the reintroduction of strychnine to protect critical infrastructure (gas lines, water lines, fibre optic cables), livestock, and agri-food industry from damage caused by gophers.
